Geneva Consultations on the 2025 UN Peacebuilding Architecture Review: Turning Words Into Action

February 14, 2025

An exclusive discussion on the UN Peacebuilding Architecture Review (PBAR) and the role of Geneva’s ecosystem, as part of a new edition of the “Geneva Consultations”, will be held on Friday 14 February 2025.

The 2025 United Nations Peacebuilding Architecture Review (PBAR), mandated by General Assembly Resolution 75/201 and Security Council Resolution 2558, is a comprehensive evaluation, aiming to assess and enhance the UN's peacebuilding efforts. Scheduled every five years, the review scrutinizes the effectiveness of the UN's peacebuilding mechanisms, including the Peacebuilding Commission (PBC), the Peacebuilding Support Office (PBSO), and the Peacebuilding Fund (PBF).

The 2025 review aims to evaluate the implementation of past resolutions on peacebuilding, identify areas for improvement, and shape forward-looking strategies to bolster the UN's role in conflict prevention and post-conflict recovery.

Building on insights from the PBAR’s informal phase and previous consultations, the Geneva Consultations will explore ways forward for the UN Peacebuilding Architecture leveraging Geneva’s policy expertise, multilateral networks, and field-driven approaches. The discussions will offer actionable recommendations that could inform the final phase of the review process, focusing on key thematic priorities where Geneva-based actors bring valuable insights and outlooks on possible innovative ways forward. These include, notably, the financing of peacebuilding and engagement with the private sector, as well as the mobilization of the human rights ecosystem and its instruments for peacebuilding—both of which again emerged as key points of concern in the 2024 UN Secretary General’s report on the PBAR.

The event is co-organized by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), the Geneva Peacebuilding Platform, and Interpeace.
