On the 15th February, 2012, at least 350 prisoners lost their lives as a result of a prison fire in Comayagua, Honduras. This was the worst prison tragedy Honduras has experienced to date. In 2003, 107 inmates lost their lives in the San Pedro Sual prison facility. In 2004, 66 prisoners lost their lives in the La Ceiba facility.

This latest tragedy highlights the need for authorities across Latin America to take prompt and effective measures to prevent this type of incident repeating itself and to address the systemic violence that is ravaging the region.

As with any loss of life, this is another tragic incident and Interpeace joins all those mourning the death of these individuals.
